Top Garage Door Brands
Top Garage Door Brands
With so many garage door manufacturers available, how do you choose the best brand for your new garage door or opener? We’re here to help you navigate the confusion you may be feeling when choosing the right manufacturer. Our opinions are built from years of working with these manufacturers and installing their products. To help you understand all these brands, we’ll break down:
- How long they’ve been around
- Quality of their product
- What they do well
- What they don’t do well
- Where their products are made
CHI Overhead Doors
With possibly the best line up from top to bottom, CHI is best known for their Accent Series and the quality of the overlay doors they build. From the beginning, CHI has been building their garage doors with an emphasis on quality. Founded by an Amish community, a larger company eventually acquired them, but they still manufacture their products in Arthur, IL. This is because CHI wants to provide their customers with the very best in garage doors and service. Striving for success, they continually work to improve their products and manufacturing process one door at a time. For these reasons, CHI is one of our most recommended brands for new garage door installation.
CHI makes all the standard varieties of doors including builder grade doors. However, they also focus on providing high end doors like their Sterling, Plank Door, and their overlay doors like the 5000 Series and the Shoreline. In particular, we like CHI’s residential garage doors. From steel to full-view to wood overlay, they have a great number of options. Their Accent Series has beautiful, faux wood garage doors created with a unique digital imaging process. In fact, it is one of the most realistic-looking faux wood doors on the market. In terms of style, they also have a great range of carriage stamp and raised or recessed paneling options for their steel doors. Lastly, they have several choices for full-view glass garage doors. No matter your vision for a new garage door, CHI has the quality and variety to supply you with the best door.
One minor issue with CHI is that they outsource their distribution. This can cause some issues with turn-around times on receiving a new door. But this is not the case with our relationship with CHI. Our distribution process with them works well in the Atlanta area because the distributor Southeast Door Technologies does a good job of managing the distribution.
Clopay Garage Doors
Clopay is well known amongst consumers because they sell their doors through Home Depot Stores. Clopay is extremely popular because they’ve done a great job branding their products with consumers. They’re well known for some of their higher end products like the Avante. Also, they have become prominent in the construction market because of their low-end, builder grade products. In particular, we are a fan of the Gallery door due to the windows being a little larger than the competition. Also, the arches aren’t plastic inserts, instead the windows are cut at an arch.
Clopay manages their own distribution, and they are a publicly traded company with a plastics manufacturer parent company. Clopay, like many companies, does some things great and others not so well. However, we only sell the products they build best. Specifically, Clopay offers some unique higher end garage doors, but not as wide of variety and quality as CHI.
We install both residential and commercial garage doors from Clopay’s line. For homes, Clopay has great steel, faux wood, real wood, and glass garage door options. In fact, they have one of the broadest ranges of excellent products for every category. For each type of garage door, they offer modern, traditional, and carriage styles in multiple wood grain or color choices. For faux wood doors, we love their Gallery Collection. For real wood doors, their Reserve Collection has the ultimate range of customization options. When it comes to commercial doors, we prefer their overhead, rolling steel, and sectional doors. Each of these come available in multiple sizes from countertop doors to industrial sized options. That means no matter the size of your opening or uses of the door, Clopay can make it happen.

Amarr Garage Doors
Amarr is the manufacturer we used when we first launched, so they will always have a special place in our heart. However, due to a lack of quality control and issues with turn around times and distribution, we decided to move away from them as our primary garage door provider. But it’s not all bad! They make a door that we love…a lot! The Amarr Classica was a one-of-a-kind product prior to Hormann building a similar product. What’s unique about the door is it’s built in three sections instead of four. Also, the exterior stamp design is unique. However, they abandoned a pinch resistant hinge which caused a lot of problems. In spite of this, Amarr and Clopay are remain the two biggest manufacturers of residential garage doors. Amarr sells their products through Lowes, Pella Garage Doors, and Costco.
Overall, the people are great, but there are some issues. That’s why, as a dealer, it’s hard to promise customers a great experience when so many unknowns are at stake. Their product isn’t good enough to overcome the issues. We still sell their products, but not without a disclaimer. However, because they provide affordability for new garage doors, they may still be the right choice for certain buyers.

Doorlink Garage Doors
Doorlink is the youngest of all of these garage door manufacturers. It’s rumored that the founders of Doorlink were part of a garage door manufacturer that went bankrupt in Ankmar garage doors. They take a similar approach to their distribution as CHI by using third party distribution. They’re product is well built in our opinion and similar in quality to CHI.
As much as we like Doorlink and sell their products, we don’t choose them as our primary provider. This is because they don’t have as wide a product offering as other manufacturers. If you’re looking for basic garage doors, Doorlink is a great option.

Raynor Garage Doors
Raynor builds high quality garage doors, specializing in urethane insulated garage doors and powder coating. However, Raynor isn’t a popular brand in Atlanta due to the lack of distribution. They only ship direct and most garage door dealers in the Atlanta market work out of their home. This makes it difficult to deliver doors on an 18 wheeler. On the plus side, though, Raynor does their own urethane insulating and powder coating which makes them a little more affordable when comparing products. In the end, we sell Raynor garage doors because the quality is top notch.
