What Is the Average Lifespan of a Garage Door Spring? - Learn About High-Cycle Garage Door Springs - Aaron Overhead Doors

What Is The Average Lifespan of a Garage Door Spring?

Understanding the lifespan of your garage door springs is crucial for maintaining a reliable system. If you have ever wondered, what is the average lifespan of a garage door spring?, knowing the answer can help you plan ahead for maintenance and avoid unexpected breakdowns. Knowing when to replace your springs also helps prolong the life of your garage door opener. This article covers the typical lifespan of garage door springs and how to maximize their longevity.

Understanding Spring Cycles

Garage door springs are measured by cycles, with each cycle representing one complete opening and closing of the door. A typical garage door spring is rated for 10,000 cycles, which usually lasts around 7 to 10 years for a typical residential garage. However, if you have a high-traffic garage, such as a commercial setting, you may want to consider high-cycle springs, which are rated for 20,000 cycles or more.

Factors Affecting Spring Lifespan

  • Frequency of Use: The more often you open and close your garage door, the quicker your springs will wear out. A door used multiple times a day will have a shorter lifespan than one that’s used only occasionally.
  • Environmental Conditions: Extreme temperatures, humidity, and exposure to salt air can all affect the lifespan of your springs. In areas with high humidity or coastal climates, springs may wear out faster due to rusting and corrosion.
  • Spring Type: Oil-tempered springs are known for their durability and can last longer than galvanized or powder-coated springs. If you live in a harsh environment or use your garage door frequently, investing in high-quality springs can save you money in the long run.

How High-cycle Garage Door Springs and Proper Maintenance Maximize Lifespan

  • Regular Maintenance: Regular lubrication and professional inspections can significantly extend the life of your springs. A trained technician will check for wear and tear and lubricate the springs to keep them operating smoothly.
  • Choose High-Cycle Springs: If you use your garage door frequently, consider installing high-cycle springs that can handle more cycles, reducing the need for frequent replacements.

By keeping your springs well-maintained and replacing them at the right time, you can maximize their lifespan and avoid costly repairs down the road.

The entire company was fantastic- from Bree calling me back on Memorial day to Joe arriving Tuesday morning to address my issue. The entire door system was reviewed nd evaluated thoroughly.
Joe patiently explained what I had, needed to be done and what my options in general were for repair. Once the estimate was ready, Joe again patiently explained the repair options and discussed in detail any specific line items I either didn't understand or was looking for clarification on.
The estimates were fair and reasonable for the work involved and once I made my choice the work was begun and finished well within the time frame Don gave me for the repair. I am extremely pleased with everything- top to bottom and will continue to highly recommend Aaron Overhead Doors to anyone looking for garage door repairs/ replacement.

I highly recommend Aaron Overhead Doors for any garage door needs. Joe Simon is professional, knowledgeable, and truly values his customers. Ally, who manages the service calls, is also extremely friendly and helpful.

When my garage door motor stopped working after just two years, Joe and the team took care of everything from start to finish with LiftMaster. They were completely honest, immediately let me know the unit was still under warranty, and kept me informed every step of the way while arranging the replacement. The entire process was seamless and stress-free thanks to their expertise and integrity.

Our sales person was wonderful - he really went the extra mile to find out what we needed and wanted. And the installation team was great - they were attentive and made doubly sure that everything was safely installed and that we were happy with the final results. It's been five months since the garage doors were installed, and we love them. We will certainly use Aaron Overhead Doors if we need garage door services in the future, and we are happy to refer them to others who need new doors or garage door service.
