If you’ve been following the garage door industry, you’ve probably seen the buzz around the Clopay VertiStack Avante. It won Best in Show at the 2025 NAHB International Builders’ Show – the Super Bowl of residential construction products – and for good reason. We’ve had our eye on this door since it first debuted, and we’re proud to say we’ve installed one here in the Atlanta area. Here’s everything you need to know before you buy.
What Is the Clopay VertiStack Avante?
The VertiStack Avante is a modern aluminum and glass garage door that operates unlike any traditional overhead door. Instead of rolling back along ceiling tracks, the door’s sections stack vertically on the wall above the opening. The result? No exposed hinges, no cables, no overhead track cluttering your ceiling or your sight lines.
The door was originally developed as a commercial product, Clopay’s VertiStack Clear door had already won a 2023 Architecture MasterPrize and been named Judges’ Pick in Building Design + Construction’s Top 75 Building Products. The VertiStack Avante brings that same trackless, clean-stack technology to the residential market.
One IBS judge put it well: the product “totally rethinks and reimagines” a space that has seen relatively limited innovation over the decades, noting it has real commercial applications now that establishments like brewpubs are embracing the concept.
VertiStack Avante vs. Clopay Avante: What’s the Difference?
This is one of the most common questions we get. Both doors are glass-and-aluminum, and both carry the Avante name, but they’re meaningfully different products.
The standard Clopay Avante is a traditional full-view glass door. It operates on a conventional overhead track system with springs, cables, and rollers. It has a 2-1/8″ commercial-grade aluminum frame and has been a go-to for modern homes and commercial spaces for years. It’s a proven, reliable door that we still recommend in many situations.
The VertiStack Avante eliminates the overhead track entirely. Its frame is a heavier-duty 2-5/8″ commercial-grade aluminum, a meaningful upgrade in rigidity. The stacking mechanism is completely different, requiring a specialized vertical channel system rather than traditional horizontal tracks. The hardware is hidden, the ceiling is completely clear when the door is open, and the sections can even recess into a soffit so the door seems to disappear.
In short: the Avante is a great glass door. The VertiStack Avante is an architectural statement.
Why We’re Excited About This Door
We’ve been installing glass garage doors in basements and breweries and restaurants since 2017. That work pulled us into the outdoor living space. As Aaron, our founder, explains:
“We started installing glass garage doors in basements and breweries/restaurants in 2017. This pulled us into the outdoor space. The challenge we had was that not everyone had the room for or wanted the track. The VertiStack solves many problems for interior designers and homeowners who want a cleaner look. Clopay did an excellent job with this product!”
That’s the crux of it. The traditional Avante door is fantastic, but the overhead track is a real constraint for homeowners and designers who want a truly open, unobstructed space. The VertiStack Avante removes that constraint entirely.
Technical Specs Worth Knowing
Here’s a quick breakdown of the door’s specs:
- Frame: 2-5/8″ commercial-grade aluminum (rust and corrosion resistant)
- Insulation: Intellicore® polyurethane in the stiles and rails – R-value 3.8
- Panel options: Tempered glass, insulated glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, or solid aluminum
- Glass options: Clear, frosted, Low-E, tinted, laminate, mirrored, obscure, and more
- Frame finishes: Clear anodized, black anodized, bronze anodized, dark bronze anodized, painted white, bronze, or chocolate – plus 1,500+ Color Blast® custom paint shades
- Size range: 5′ to 18’6″ wide, 6′ to 10′ tall High wind: WindCode® reinforcement available
- Energy compliance: Meets ASHRAE 90.1, Title 24, and IECC 2021 Section C406.9 air infiltration requirements
The door is compatible with a dedicated operator system, it does not use a standard torsion spring opener. That distinction matters a lot when it comes to installation.
Limitations to Know Before You Buy
No product is perfect for every situation. Here are the honest constraints to consider:
Wall space above the opening is required. Unlike a traditional door that uses ceiling depth, the VertiStack Avante needs clear wall space above the opening to stack. If your opening sits close to a roofline or ceiling with no clearance above, this door won’t work without architectural modifications.
Interior mount only. The door mounts from the inside. This is an important planning detail for new construction and remodels alike.
The operator system is proprietary. You can’t retrofit a standard garage door opener onto this system. The motor and controls are designed specifically for the VertiStack mechanism.
Not a DIY install. We’ll say this plainly: this door is more comparable to a commercial door than a standard residential door. The mechanics are different, the tolerances are tighter, and the installation requires experience with both residential and commercial door systems.
Why Installer Expertise Matters Here
Most garage door companies install traditional doors every day. The VertiStack Avante is a different animal. The vertical stacking channel system, the way sections engage and disengage, the operator integration, it all requires a higher level of technical proficiency than a standard residential install.
We’ve built our reputation on specialty and custom work, including full commercial glass door installations in restaurants, breweries, and commercial spaces since 2017. That background is exactly why we sought out and installed this door. We strongly recommend finding a certified residential and commercial installer when purchasing a VertiStack Avante, not just a residential-only dealer.

What Does the Clopay VertiStack Avante Cost?
This is the question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends. The VertiStack Avante is a premium architectural product with commercial-grade engineering. Pricing is custom because the door is custom. It’s built to your specific opening dimensions, glass selection, frame finish, and panel configuration.
What we can tell you is that this is not an entry-level glass door. It’s priced above the standard Avante collection, and appropriately so. The engineering, materials, and specialized installation all factor into the total cost. Labor for installation is also higher than a traditional door because of the complexity and time involved.
The best thing you can do is contact us directly for an accurate quote. We’ll assess your opening, discuss your design goals, and walk you through options so there are no surprises.
